Steven Spielberg's Next Movie: Release Date, Cast And Other Things We Know So Far
The legend returns...

Since taking over the summer box office with Jaws 50 years ago,, Steven Spielberg has been putting out one legendary movie after another, ranging from all-time great sci-fi films to Best Picture winners, and everything in between. And fortunately for us, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker continues to create new movies.
When the 2026 summer blockbuster season kicks off, the massively successful, popular, and prolific filmmaker will add another movie to that list. Though the title hasn’t been confirmed just yet, I can’t hold back my excitement for what Universal Pictures has called an “event film.” So, for now, I'm going to break down everything we know about the mysterious project that has the internet buzzing.
What Is The Release Date For Steven Spielberg's Next Movie?
So, when will we get to see this mysterious Steven Spielberg movie? Well, we won’t see it on the 2025 movie schedule, as Universal Pictures has announced that the “untitled event film” will hit theaters on June 12, 2026, partway through the busy summer blockbuster season. And, what a summer it’s going to be at the box office.
Spielberg’s latest big-screen affair will open just after two of the most anticipated movies in recent memory, with the Russo brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday and Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu. But that’s just the beginning, as we’ll see Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, and the next Spider-Man movie before school starts back up.
The New Steven Spielberg Movie Cast
Not much is known about the project at this point, but we do know that the new Steven Spielberg movie cast is stacked with incredibly talented actors from top to bottom. And since we’re so early in the film’s development and pre-production, this list is only going to grow as the weeks and months go by. Let’s meet them now…
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt will add Spielberg to the list of talented directors the Academy Award-nominated actress has worked with in the past, as Variety reported in June 2024 that the Oppenheimer and The Fall Guy star would be appearing in Universal Pictures’ big event film. Blunt is no stranger when it comes to big productions, as she’s previously led projects like Edge of Tomorrow, Jungle Cruise, and the critically acclaimed A Quiet Place movies, to name a few.
Josh O’Connor
In November 2024, Deadline reported that Josh O’Connor would be joining the cast of Spielberg’s next project, but no information about his character was revealed at the time. O’Connor, who broke out as a young Prince Charles in the third and fourth seasons of The Crown, has been on a run as of late with big roles in films like Lee and Challengers. He’s also set to appear in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery in 2025.

Colin Firth
Colin Firth will finally get to work with Spielberg, as the Oscar winner is set to appear in the director’s upcoming event film. Back in August 2024, Deadline reported that the star of The King’s Speech, Love Actually, and the Kingsman movies would be appearing in this highly anticipated project. With scores of credits to his name, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and The English Patient, Firth should feel right at home.
Colman Domingo
Colman Domingo has spent the past few years becoming one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood thanks to unforgettable roles in Rustin, The Color Purple, and most recently, Sing Sing. That momentum won’t stop anytime soon, as Deadline has reported that Domingo will have a role in Spielberg’s upcoming project. Like the other actors involved, Domingo’s exact role has not yet been disclosed.
Wyatt Russell
Wyatt Russell has been on an absolute tear the last few years with a prominent role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as John Walker, a.k.a. U.S. Agent, in Thunderbolts* and Apple TV’s Monarch. Now, according to Deadline, the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn will be working with Spielberg in his latest movie.
Eve Hewson
And then there’s Eve Hewson, who was announced to be part of the upcoming movie back in September 2024, per Deadline. This won’t be her first time working with Spielberg, as she previously appeared in Bridge of Spies. Since then, Hewson has landed roles in movies like Tesla and Flora and Son, as well as shows like Bad Sisters and The Perfect Couple.
On top of all these actors, PW Insider reported in early 2025 that AEW wrestlers Brian Cage and Lance Archer would be appearing in a wrestling scene in the upcoming Spielberg pic, as would the legendary Chavo Guerrero Jr., who is set to play a referee in a match.
What Is Steven Spielberg’s Next Movie About?
Steven Spielberg’s next movie is still a bit of a mystery, but a Variety report from April 2024 may have given us an idea of what to expect. In the article, which talked about Spielberg and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming projects, the outlet cited sources familiar with the film when it reported that the follow-up to The Fabelmans would be a UFO movie based on an original idea from the director.
The legendary filmmaker is no stranger when it comes to UFO and alien stories, as some of Spielberg’s best movies, like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and War of the Worlds, have all dealt with interplanetary visitors. However, details still remains unknown, as everything was still being kept under lock and key when Deadline reported on the project back in February 2025.
Steven Spielberg Is Teaming Up With Longtime Collaborator David Koepp
Spielberg may have come up with the original idea behind his latest event film, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, his longtime collaborator David Koepp is penning the script. Koepp previously worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
When speaking with The Wrap in late 2024, Koepp, who penned the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, was asked about his latest collaboration with Spielberg, but he was quick to shut down talk about plot specifics before discussing how much he likes it:
I am so not allowed to say anything. I think deep down, it bothers Steven that I’ve read the script. … It’s great because it’s an original. It was his idea, his story, and working on originals is really fun.
With the success of their previous collaborations, for the most part, it’s going to be exciting to see what these two icons of the industry have cooked up for audiences.
Production Got Underway In February 2025
Production on Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie got underway in February 2025, as seen in an article by NJ.com featuring on-set photos of Wyatt Russell and Emily Blunt as they were filming a scene at a smoky gas station. Though there were several photos shared, it was hard to make sense of what these scenes would include outside of Russell and Blunt’s characters embracing on the streets.
This came a few weeks after GWCI On Location shared a casting call for Huntington, New York residents to portray wrestling fans (this makes sense considering a few AEW wrestlers appear to have filmed a wrestling match for the movie) in the upcoming Spielberg movie.
It is not yet known just how long the shoot will last, but with the June 2026 release date, and what will probably be an extended post-production stage, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if filming wrapped at some point before summer gets into full swing.
Steven Spielberg’s New Movie Will Reportedly Be Called The Dish
Though nothing has been confirmed by Spielberg or Universal Pictures, the legendary filmmaker’s upcoming movie will reportedly be titled The Dish. This comes from a July 2024 report from World of Reel breaking down an IMAX investor presentation laying out the packed 2026 summer lineup that listed a Universal Pictures release dated for May 2026 (the original release date before it was shifted to June) that was between Avengers: Doomsday and The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Again, neither the studio nor the director has come out and commented on The Dish being the title. We will share more information as soon as a title is confirmed in the coming weeks and months.
This Isn’t The Only Steven Spielberg Project In The Works
Steven Spielberg’s next movie isn’t the filmmaker’s only big project coming out in the near future, as he’s teaming up with Martin Scorsese to produce the upcoming Apple TV+ series Cape Fear. In November 2024, Apple TV+ announced that the series is being adapted by Nick Antosca and will see Academy Award winner Javier Bardem take on the role of Max Cady, the unhinged and revenge-fueled ex-convict famously played by Robert Mitchum in the 1962 adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s The Executioners novel, and then later by Robert De Niro in Scorsese’s tremendous 1991 remake.
It will only be a matter of time before Steven Spielberg sets out to be the king of the summer blockbuster season once again. With a little more than a year (as of this writing) before we get to see his mysterious upcoming movie, be sure to keep coming back for all the latest and greatest updates.

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.
